New Thing #149: I saw a Martin Scorsese movie in a movie theater.

I love going to the movies, natch, and I like to think of myself as a having seen my fair share of films, but even the most avid moviegoer has to have missed at least some of the biggies along the road, and, well, I have to admit that not only have I never seen a Martin Scorsese movie in a movie theater, but, um, I haven’t seen most of Martin Scorsese’s movies at all. I haven’t actively avoided his films, they’ve just slipped by me. Raging Bull? Never seen it. Taxi Driver? Nope. Goodfellas? Sorry. Casino, Last Temptation of the Christ, and Gangs of New York? No, no, and no. (I am SUCH a loser.) (The only Scorsese movies I'd ever seen before the other night were The Age of Innocence and Cape Fear.)

But all of that’s going to change, and soon, because after seeing The Departed, I want to see every Martin fucking Scorsese movie fucking right the fuck now. He’s a genius. Who knew? (Okay, a lot of people knew, and I feel shame—so much shame—for not knowing.) (I mean, I figured, but I didn’t really KNOW.) (And: Now. I. Know.)

(New Thing #149: I saw a Martin Scorsese movie in a movie theater.)

Oh, and I’ve always said that you’re either a Fan of Damon or you’re a Fan of Affleck, and the twain shall never meet. Everyone in the world has one who they prefer over the other. It’s a simple matter of fact. Like, if you polled a thousand people and asked them “Damon or Affleck,” I promise you that you wouldn’t even get one lone aberrant responder trying to say “both.” You just wouldn’t ever hear “both” because those “I like both Damon and Affleck” people simply don’t exist in the real world. And I’ve always been a Fan of Affleck (not for any real reason, really, other than the fact that I’ve always enjoyed being contrary with Jesse whenever he mentioned Damon, because Jesse has always been an unapologetic Fan of Damon), but after watching The Departed, I have to concede to Jesse and admit that Damon is way better than Affleck. He rocks in this movie.

The movie may not be for everyone--I've talked to some people who didn't like it--but I was the first movie I've loved--really, really loved--all year.

Damon was indeed good in this one, but come Oscar time, I think you'll only be hearing two actors' names from this one, Leo and Nicholson .. and if one of them actually manages to win, it will be Leo, me thinks

ooooh! i can't wait to see it! i'm calling you later, too.

no way, linds!

i was totally agreeing with the "no one likes them equally thing."

i'm totally a damon girl. he's the perfect blend of sexy (check out the fight scenes of the bourne movies... and, i love big noses) and smart.

affleck is just a sensitive ex-frat man. charming yes. i'd drink a beer with him, i guess.

just when i thought i was getting to know you, linds. i'm shocked!

gedex:
that sounds like some new drug. maybe one that makes people think that ben affleck didn't ride matt damon's coat tails. now, i'm talking to you, mr. e.r.p.

whoh, do i have strong opinions today. totally hormonal.

as Team America said, "Matt Damon". Are puppets ever wrong?

The Departed, from the Hong Kong films Mou gaan dou (2002) And the prequel Mou gaan dou II(2003). Sort of weird the prequel was called "II" and was done after Mou gaan dou, but both films are said to be great...though they didn't have Jack or Matt or Leo.
It seems a lot of great films (read: Star Wars, Magnificent
Seven) come from Asian films.

Television is destroying your brain--and, why did everybody have to get killed in the end? Why didn't the girl open the envelope after Leo died? Whose baby was it? How could he have killed the best president we've had in a very long time? The acting was great, but I do have questions. And then there's the problem with your brain after watching all those reality shows. Much better to stick to "Grey's Anatomy," which is so full of angst that it feels much more real.

one of my favorite movies of all time is "battle royale" which inspired quentin tarantino's "kill bill 1&2." it's amazing.

I remember the first time I saw Damon act in something--that idiotic Meg Ryan movie, where he played an ex-soldier (or maybe he was still a soldier) who was an addict. He was very, very thin in that movie, and totally mesmerizing (in the good way), and I remember thinking, "Damn, here's the next new star."

I also remember seeing Affleck in something. That craptastic Amy movie. Bleh. Everything about it sucked except the skateboarder dude who played opposite him. Talk about a naked-fucking-Emporer.

How have I not replied to any of the comments in this thread?

Reel Fanatic: you're right, Leo will probably get the nomination over Damon. Leo's the one we care about more in the movie. And he's terrific.

poop, you must see it! (though, i have to admit, everyone who has taken my recommendation and gone to see it has hated it, or, if not hated it, then really not liked it that much, and now i feel like maybe i should stop recommending it to people.)

linds, yer kinky.

aims, i agree that affleck hasn't done much in a while to really be excited about, but i used to really like him (like, back in the day).

urp, "some people" indeed.

Jesse, you don't need puppets to support your case. I mean, jeez, you've been all about Damon for so long it's gotten kinda boring. Sorry.

Hey dad, I think the original Hong Kong film was called Internal Affairs, they mentioned it in one of the reviews I read. I want to check it out, do you know if it's rentable? It must be. But first I need to check out all of the Scorsese movies I've missed. (And you said Star Wars is based on an Asian film??? Really??? I never knew that!) xoxo

Mom, we'll have to have a discussion about the movie because clearly you didn't get the intricacies of the plot. I can answer your questions. Bring it on!

My brain is gonna be fine, obviously. I mean, my brain was able to get the subtleties of The Departed while yours "has some questions"! Ha! See--maybe reality TV is HONING my brainpower!?!? Did we ever think of that?

xoxo

communicatrix, it took me a long time, but i've finally seen the light, re: Damon and Affleck.

ooh, I want to see this now. As for the Damon or Affleck canundrum (spelling?), I think Damon is hands down the better actor...but I enjoy looking at Affleck more!
