New Thing #166: I ate some rambutan.

Have you ever eaten the strange and bizarre (and delicious) fruit known as the Rambutan? (It's a cousin of the lychee.)

No? Never even heard of it? Yeah, me neither.

Until Saturday night, that is.

I saw it at Trader Joe's and I was fascinated by it's gangliness and hairiness and I figured, hey, it's My Year of New Things, so I bought it to bring as pot luck to Lanie's birthday party.

Pretty much everyone else at the party was like, "hey, it's not fucking my freaking Year of New Things," so no one else would try it, but I found the damn little Rambutans oddly tasty. Seriously. It's really good (in a surprisingly weird way) (like, it's the texture that's a tough sell, because it feels like octapussyish rubber) (but still) and I totally recommend it if you ever get a chance to try it. (Seriously.)

That's all I have to say about Rambutan, but before I go I want to share a photo (taken by Gina) that I like to call Me and Rambutan. The photo is kind of graphic and disturbing, though, so THIS IS A WARNING. DO NOT SCROLL DOWN TO LOOK AT THE PHOTO UNLESS YOU ARE OKAY WITH GRAPHIC AND DISTURBING IMAGES.

See?!? SCARY!

Don't say I didn't tell you so. (What is up with my eyes in this photo? I seriously have, like, serial killer eyes in this photo.)

ummm...why is that picture disturbing? I find it to be not disturbing.

Joe, the photo is disturbing because my eyes look kind of serial killerish and the hair fruit in my mouth looks kinda like it's coming out of my mouth and it's alive, a la the scene in Alien when the alien comes out of that guys stomach. At least, that's why it's disturbing to me.

Also, it looks like maybe it's a screencapture from a snuff film. At least, that's what it looks like to me.

Or maybe I'm just weird and reading too much into the photo, but it's a picture of me and when I saw it I was like "um, gross."

I'm so glad you posted that picture. I was in Asia a couple of years back and had to go to this big dinner. And all over the place were these really beautiful, and scary, looking red things with spikes.

Being the adventurous eater I am, I tried one, then proceeded to get my fill of them. They really are good aren't they?

There were a whole bunch of other strange looking fruit at this event and while most of them were great, a couple were so bad I had to run back to my spiky friend to cleanse the palate as they say.

That photo was nowhere NEAR disturbing enough for all of the build-up.

Dave, I want to know more about strange foreign fruits I've never tried. (That sounded very metaphorical, but I meant it as literally as possible.)

Okay, but BON, it was KINDA disturbing.
