One Movie, i.e. Your Comfort Film

If you could only watch one movie ever again for the rest of your life, and you could watch it as many times as you wanted, what movie would you pick?

The movie you choose doesn't have to be your "favorite" film, per se, or perfect by any means, just a movie that would make you completely happy to see over and over (and over) again, the one movie that you never get tired of.

Just curious.

The American President with Annette Bening and Michael Douglas.

It would have to be eternal sunshine of the spotless mind. But the photo from irreconcilable (sp?) differences brings back memories too. I loved that movie, maybe too much for a kid! :)

Urp, of course I knew you would say Anne of Green Gables.

DRC, american president is a great movie. I love the scene where he calls her and she doesn't believe that it's him, i just love annette bening in that scene. Why the frig has she not ever won an academy award?

Erik said...

Lanie, i need to see Eternal Sunshine again, I've only seen it once and didn't love it, but I feel like I just wasn't in the right mood. I remember thinking that Kate Winslet was wonderful (as always), though.

And I don't think there's anything wrong with like Irreconcilable Differences--it's impossible to like it too much. MORE PEOPLE should like it too much (SO THEY MIGHT RELEASE IT ON DVD). My vhs copy doesn't work anymore. I put the photo of Irreconcilable on this post because i've been thinking that might be my choice, but i haven't decided for sure. My first instinct was to pick Back to the Future. I'm still on the fence.

Mr. Mom

Oh, I love this question.

Hmm. Eternal Sunshine might be one, good call - every moment of that movie continues to be interesting to me, no matter how many times I see it. But I think Only Angels Have Wings might be the one for real. I haven't gotten sick of that one yet and I watch it on a weekly basis, never ever getting sick of it.

Erik said...

Okay, Michele, your pick made me realize what my actual pick MUST be, which is Tootsie. Yep, gotta be Tootsie. I've watched Tootsie hundreds (HUNDREDS) of times and will never ever get sick of it.

I've only seen Mr. Mom once, way back in the 80s ("way back," ha) and I remember being embarrassed to watch it because there was that one scene where a group of moms take Michael Keaton to a male strip club. (Is that scene actually in the movie, or is my brain playing tricks on me?)

Erik said...

Sheila, I really DO need to see Eternal Sunshine again. I gave it a bad rap. I think I was in a contrary mood the one time I saw it.

And I've never seen Only Angels Have Wings. It's on the list.

You Can Count on Me. Beautiful Mark Ruffalo at his best, beautiful Laura Linney at her best (but when is she not?), funny, moving, understated...I've said all this before.

Eternal Sunshine's a good choice too, though, and also has the beautiful Mark Ruffalo dancing in his underwear.

You really need to watch Mr.Mom again, it's a classic. I've always had a place in my heart for Teri Garr after wathcing that movie. Yes, there is a stripper scene and I was embarrassed way back too. =)
btw...yesterday on KLOS they played Beatles all day and I was like "I should call Eric", and of course felt so lame cuz um I don't have your number and have never really talked to you IRL but you were in my thoughts.

Tombstone...

I think.

Maybe City Slickers.

this question isn't fair...

but I think it's Tombstone

Erik said...

FWL, the thing I love about You Can Count On Me (well, there are many things, but I love this one in particular) is that the original play was just the first scene with the brother and sister in the restaurant and then the last scene with the brother and sister on the bus bench, and Kenneth Lonergan filled everything in between for the movie. It's a brilliant adaptation that explodes the original, while keeping everything wonderful about the original still wonderful. (Because both of those scenes are crazy good.)

And I love that they never say the title of the film.

Erik said...

Michele, what number is KLOS on the dial? I am (almost) ashamed to admit that I mostly listen to Star 98.7. (I think that James Blunt song "Beautiful" is one of the worst songs ever, but I cannot change the dial when it plays--it compels me to listen, I can't explain it other than that: it compels me.)

Erik said...

Joe Chandler, this question is fun BECAUSE of its unfairness.

I would pick City Slickers over Tombstone because you're gonna want a few laughs when you're watching the same movie over and over again for the rest of your life.

Joe Chandler said...

Tombstone is funny.

The reason to consider city slickers is the fact that it makes you feel good. if you were focused on comedy i feel like you'd have to go witha blazing saddles or a spaceballs or a holy grail.

Erik said...

That's why I pick Tootsie: it makes me laugh, it makes me cry, it's got romance, drama, comedy, and cross-dressing. It seriously has everything.

Does Tombstone have cross-dressing?

Gina said...

Great question, but very tough..

I'd have to say toss up between My Best Friends Wedding and Love Actually.

I Heat both those movies and have seen them a million times.

Joe Chandler said...

I think it might...there is a troupe of actors...I think one of them dresses up as a lady.

Erik said...

Gina, i love Rupert Everett in Best Friend's Wedding. He was on The View last week and he was so charming and he said that he can't get a date.

Rupert Everett, I can't imagine you as the self googling type, but if you ever self-google and find yourself here, I will totally go out with you.

Erik said...

Okay, Joe Chandler, as long as Tombstone has cross-dressing then I approve of it being your one movie.

Anonymous said...

You know what, Tootsie is an AWESOME choice.

Anonymous said...

Oh crap. Thought of another one.

Notting Hill.

Love every second of that cheese-ball film. I have seen it countless times, seriously. I always cry at the end. I always laugh at all the same spots. LOVE that movie.

Erik said...

Sheila, one of my favorite sequences in Tootsie is Michael's surprise birthday party. Sidney Pollack basically just had the actors throw him a party, so that's all improvised. That moment when Teri Garr breaks out of the bathroom, holding a plunger, and says "didn't anyone hear me? I've been trapped in the bathroom for twenty minutes!"--Teri Garr said to Pollack, "I have an idea, point the camera at the bathroom door." And then she whipped that out. Brilliant. I looooove Teri Garr in that movie.

Erik said...

I just watched Notting Hill last month! My favorite scene is when he brings her to dinner at his sister's house...love the moment when they leave and they're standing outside and they hear his sister and friends cheering inside because they just met a movie star. And that last scene where she's answering questions for the press, that's the scene that always makes me cry.

Totally cheeseball, but great.

The first movie that comes to mind is Nashville. So many great moments, and I never get tired of Karen Black singing "Memphis" or Barbara Harris singing "It Don't Worry Me." But then you mentioned Tootsie and I'm torn--I'd have to have a double bill, no doubt about it. And Notting Hill is fabulous, by the way: when Elvis Costello is singing "She" and all those images of beautiful Julia go flying by I just weep and weep it's so gorgeous. I bought the soundtrack just for that song.

Erik said...

Doug, it's impossible to watch that montage of images of Julia Roberts and not be like "wow, she IS a star." It's like she has actual literal star wattage.

i love garden state. i have watched it (what seems like) a million times and can't seem to get enough.

drc said...

I love Notting Hill. I own that one.

Does the movie have to have cross-dressing in it? Then it would have to be Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.

I sing and dance along every time.

Erik said...

Jennifer, I love Garden State too. I often write to the soundtrack.

Erik said...

DRC, the comfort movie you choose doesn't have to have cross dressing in it! That was a totally arbitrary distinction.

What about "When Harry Met Sally?" Does anyone else love that one?!!

Or, I could watch any Audrey Hepburn movie over and over again, but I guess I would pick "Love in the Afternoon." This might make me sound old, but I don't think so--her appeal is timeless, and this movie is so romantic.

And I think I prefer "Dave" to "The American President," though I like both. It's good to watch something that makes the world seem to operate as it should, though it never will.

PAM:

When Harry Met Sally is a great choice. For whatever reason, whenever I think of When Harry Met Sally, I also think of Broadcast News and Working Girl. I guess they all came out around the same time, but they're certainly a romantic comedy triumvirate of some sort. What ever happened to Meg Ryan??? She was so great in the 80s.

I've never seen Love in the Afternoon.

And both Dave and The American President are great, but I think I might be with you on Dave slightly tipping the scales. It's because of Kevin Kline. He's too good.

jeremy said...

Teen Witch . . . no, wait, The Decameron--back the bus up, Jules and Jim. Make that L'Avventura. Blech. I don't know, maybe Wet, Hot American Summer. Or Big Lebowski.

Erik said...

Okay, Jeremy, YES:

Wet Hot American Summer. TOTALLY. If Tootsie wasn't my 1st choice and if Back to the Future wasn't my second choice, then Wet Hot American Summer would completely be my choice. (I saw it 9 times in the theater.)

Erik said...

Okay, when I decided to italicize "in the theater" in the last comment, it seemed appropriate, but now it seems really melodramatic. The reason I emphasized it, though, was because I think most people didn't discover WHAS until it was on video and I'm proud to have been ahead of the curve on that one, seeing it 9 times in the one movie theater it was playing in in LA, for the two or three weeks it was playing.

jeremy said...

I saw it on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday opening weekend.
Not nine times like some people, but I like to think I gave it a fair share of business.
And, yes, the italics were on purpose.

Gina said...

I have never seen Wet Hot American Summer. How does that make you feel?

Erik said...

JEREMY: Friday, Saturday, and Sunday of opening weekend are impressive. I approve of your fandom.

GINA: It makes me feel like we must have a movie night soon! I own the DVD! You must see the movie!

Anonymous said...

Yes, Broadcast News and Working Girl are movies I can watch over and over again, too. Need a movie night for romantics, another for laughs, another for Good Guy Presidents with Great Girlfriend/First Ladies...It's raining and I want to start now!
PAM

Erik said...

PAM, you've got rain??? It's overcast down here, but it hasn't started raining. I think the rain's on its way though. I hope it comes, I'm in the mood for rain!

Jeremiah Johnson. I love this Sydney Pollack, Robert Redford movie...probably becausee I truely...truely believe that I lived this life a couple of hundred years ago.

I can't pick just one.

Herbie (the real ones -- Lindsay Lohan and her drunk fire crotch is not invited to my comfort movie party)
Any Given Sunday
Overboard

But I have to say PAM had a good one with When Harry Met Sally. And Love Actually. But I can't watch Love Actually a lot because of all the Christmas. And not because I'm a jew, it's because I hate holidays. But I do love me some Bill Nighy.

Erik said...

Dad, I love that people are picking movies I've never seen because I get to add them to my "to see" list.

And yes, Go Rhodies!

Erik said...

Leanor,

We've already bonded over our mutual love of Overboard, haven't we?

Erik said...

Oh, and El, your love of Any Given Sunday makes me happy because it's kinda weird.

Sherry Angel said...

I just rented Overboard and loved watching it for the zillionth time. Not sure what that says about me, but it's just so much fun.
PAM

Gina said...

Love Overboard. Oh, what about Big Business? And Camp Beverly Hills? Love those too!!!!

Anonymous said...

I don't know that we have bonded over Overboard. In any case, we should do it more. All the time.

And Any Given Sunday is NOT a weird choice. Football movies are the best kind of movies. They're all sweat, blood, balls and complete determination. Add a yelling Al Pacino -- now, how is that weird? It's a masterpeice. Now, if you're not convinced, you will love the sorely overlooked performance by Jamie Foxx as "Steamin' Willie Beamin." I love it.

Anonymous said...

My two cents...I would say it is a tie between Stripes and Blazing Saddles (thanks for the idea joe)with Stripes as the winner. Its two movies in one and is just mindless humor. Not anything close to the selections of movies in this comment section but my choice. Matty K

And thanks, btw. This is exactly the kind of Saturday afternoon movie list I was hankering for...

I fear what this says about my psychology but I'd have to say either
I Heart Huckabees (despite the stupid name) or Pi. Mabye Little Voice because I can listen to Jane Horrocks all day and then I could also pefect my completely awful Michael Caine impression.

Btw, love your blog!
